Abstract
1342512 Fluid contact tray SEITETSU KAGAKU CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970 30 March 1970] 24374/71 Heading B1R A tray for fluid contact apparatus comprises a plurality of parallel bars pivotally mounted on a supporting frame such that the bars are biassed towards a rest position in which the tray is open for fluid passage, but pivot to a more open position when the fluid flow rate exceeds a certain value. Thus the area of fluid contact varies according to the fluid flow rate. The bars may take various forms in crosssection and may be solid, hollow or flat and/or perforated. They are preferably joined by an interconnecting element to avoid uneven opening. In Figs. 1-3 each tray, provided with conventional weir 3 and downcomer 2, is formed with bars 4 pivotally mounted at points 8 across fixed supporting bars 5, recesses 7 in bars 4 engaging notches 6 in bars 5. Dotted lines 4′ indicate the maximum opening position of bars 4. In Fig. 4 the movable bars are divided into two banks longitudinally by a weir. In (Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 9) the bars are of L-shaped, V-shaped, fan-shaped, and Z-shaped cross-section respectively and the (Figs. 6 and 7) bars are perforated. In (Fig. 8) the movable element is located in a space between upper and low supporting bars. Figs. 10 and 11 show L-shaped movable elements 32 on support 31 interconnected by upper bar 34 which has recesses 33 to accommodate the top edges of 32. Elements 32 have slots 36 on one side, and recesses 37 at each end which engage with recesses 35 in support bar 31. In Fig. 12 movable elements 39 are linked to interconnecting bar 41 by further pieces 41, and in (Fig. 13) another linking construction is shown. Fig. 14 shows a construction to allow stagewise opening of elements 48, upper bar 50 having two differently inclined contact faces 51, 52 against which the upper surface of 48 can rest (Fig. 15) in another construction for stagewise opening. The tray can be used in gas-liquid contact apparatus for distillation, rectification or absorption, in liquid-liquid or heat-exchanging liquid-solid contact apparatus for extraction and washing or in gas-solid contact apparatus such as fluidised beds or air-slides.
