Abstract
1342802 Foamed polysiloxanes DOW CORNING CORP 7 Sept 1971 [29 Oct 1970] 41598/71 Headings C3C and C3R [Also in Divisions B1-B2] A metal substrate has coated on the surface thereof a composition comprising: (A) an elastomer-forming organosiloxane polymer, (B) 0-250 parts by weight of silica, (C) 0-15 parts by weight of high temperature decomposing fibre which melts at a temperature of above 815‹ C., (D) 1-50 parts by weight of a monocellular thermoplastic resinous polymeric particle having encapsulated therein a discrete portion of a volatile liquid blowing agent which becomes gaseous at a temperature below the softening point of the polymer, the parts of (B), (C) and (D) being based on each 100 parts by weight of organosiloxane polymer A, the composition being present in an amount sufficient to protect the substrate from the deleterious effects of gases at temperatures above 815‹ C. The coating composition may be produced by forming a homogeneous mixture of (A), (B) and (C), adding the unblown particle ingredient (D), and then heating at a temperature sufficiently high to volatilize the encapsulated liquid and hence produce expanded particles. Metals which may be coated are alloys of iron, titanium, chromium, aluminium, nickel and beryllium. These metals may be in sheet form or in finished form, e.g. in the form of a nose cone or body of an aerospace vehicle. The elastomer forming organosiloxane polymers may be heat curable or room temperature vulcanizing polymers. The fibres may be composed of carbon, graphite, silica, nitrides, borides, oxides or silicates and are preferably 600-1200 microns in length. The polymeric particles may be derived from styrene and acrylate monomers whilst copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, and of acrylonitrile with vinyl chloride or vinyl bromide may be used. Vinyl esters and unsaturated carboxylic acids may also be incorporated in the copolymer. The examples refer to compositions which contain a vinyl endblocked copolymer of dimethyl siloxane and phenylmethyl siloxane and a mixture of a vinyl containing polydimethyl siloxane, a siloxane copolymer and a methylvinyl siloxane polymer carbon fibres, optionally silica and monocellular particles of an acrylonitrile-vinylidene chloride copolymer containing neopentane as a blowing agent. Comparative examples refer to compositions containing hollow glass particles constituting component (D).
