Abstract
1346766 Colorimeters and fluorimeters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 June 1971 [29 June 1970 14 Dec 1970 2] 31323/70 59284/70 and 59285/70 Heading G1A In photo-metric apparatus, such as a colorimeter or fluorimeter, utilizing at least one fluorescent tube as light source, the flickering of the tube near its ends, an effect produced especially during the initial period after ignition, is controlled by supplying the tube with a high frequency alternating current. For colorimetry, miniature daylight tube 10 is switched on and illuminates sample aperture 12 via U.V.-absorbing filter 13. For fluorimetry, U.V. emitting tube 11 and U.V. transmitting filter 14 are used. An inverter 23 is provided to convert a D. C. power supply e.g. from an accumulator into the required (e.g. 1 to 100 kHz) A.C. The reflected light passes via condenser 15, filter drum 18 to photo-cell 17. The drum is provided with three tristimulus filters, and black U.V. transmitting and yellow U.V. abosrbing filters. Cadmium sulphide cells 21, 22 sense the intensities of lamps 10, 11 and compensate for slow changes in light level from the tubes. The whole apparatus in body portion A is connected by flexible cable and attachable by bayonet fittings to control and supply console (B), Fig. 1 (not shown), and may be turned to any required angle for application to a sample. The inverter may utilize transistors, electron tubes or thyristors. Suggested readout is a digital voltmeter.
