Abstract

1346771 Tankers for liquefied gas W HAMILTON 13 May 1971 [20 May 1970 22 Jan 1971] 24494/70 and 2992/71 Headings B7A and B7S Liquid gas tanks for installation in the hull of a tanker comprise corrugated side, bottom, top and end walls in which the end wall corrugations are vertical, while those of the other walls run lengthwise of the ship. The side walls are secured to the hull by sliding connections permitting lengthwise expansion and contraction of these walls, while lateral movement of the walls is accommodated by movement of the corrugations. Figs. 3 and 4 (Prov.) show an embodiment in which clips 11, secured to the hull, slidably engage T-ribs 10 which are integral with extruded aluminium alloy channels 8 which are welded together to form the tank. The end walls carry reinforcing beams (25) which are interconnected by tie-rods 31. This flat sided wall arrangement can be modified to an oval shape (Fig. 12, not shown) anchored to the hull by non-conducting self-lubricating slides 118 (Fig. 13) which are attached to the hull by brackets 124 and channels 123, 1231, and engage T-ribs 111 extruded with channels 104, 105. The welds 137, 133 are sealed by shrouds 136, 141, and the spaces within the shrouds are pressurized to inhibit leakage from the tank. Fig. 15 illustrates a further embodiment in which channels 151 are of rolled nickel steel. Here the guiding is effected by brackets 156 sliding on blocks 158 secured to the hull and the tank is further sealed by a nickel steel liner 171.
