Abstract

1346785 Aerials SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 17 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 15298/71 Heading H4A A transparent panel provided with aerial conductors, and suitable for use as a window in a vehicle, has a first of said conductors disposed adjacently and inwardly of a first panel edge, and at least one second conductor disposed substantially centrally and extending from the first conductor to a terminal which is disposed inwardly of the panel edge opposite the first edge. As described, a panel 11, Fig. 3, carries a first conductor which is formed as a folded dipole with an upper member 12, and lower members 13, 13a. The adjacent outer ends of the members are connected together, but said members are continued on the panel, with short intervening gaps, to the side edges thereof, for aesthetic reasons. The inner ends of the members 13, 13a are continued by central vertical conductors 14, 14a to terminals 15, 15a near the lower edge of the panel. In other embodiments, either a simple Tee-shaped aerial is provided (Fig. 1, not shown), or a similar aerial in which the outer ends of the Tee are extended by conductors disposed parallel to the side edges of the panel (Fig. 2, not shown). The transparent panel may consist of a single sheet of thermally toughened safety glass or it may be of laminated construction in which either a single sheet of glass and a single sheet of plastics material are joined together by an adhesive layer, or two sheets of glass and an intermediate sheet of plastics material are joined together by adhesive layers. The first conductor is preferably wider than the second conductor, e.g., between 0À4 to 2À0 mm. instead of between 0À1 to 0À4 mm., and said conductors may be formed on a surface of one of said sheets using a conductive silver composition and a silk screen or other process. If a glass sheet is to be thermally treated, the conductors are first deposited on a surface thereof, so that they are baked during said treatment. Where there is a plastic interlayer, the second conductor or conductors may be thin (e.g. 0À1 mm. dia.) wires embedded therein. Holes are provided in a glass sheet on which the first conductor is formed, if necessary to allow connection with the second conductor, as shown in Fig. 9.
