Abstract

1348072 Analogue to digital converter ROSEMOUNT ENG CO Ltd 18 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 40153/71 Heading G4H In an analogue to digital converter in which the digital value is compared with the analogue in a comparator and the comparator output is used to update the digital value; the digital value is converted to a pulse frequency and then either the pulse frequency is converted to an analogue voltage or the analogue voltage to a pulse frequency. The digital value is held in a storage device which may be an up/down counter or a shift register with an adder/subtractor in the recirculation loop feeding signals from the output back to the input of the shift register. As described, the digital value in shift register 14 is continually cycled through adder/subtractor 16 by shift pulses from 19. The digital signal is converted to a signal in which the pulse repetition frequency represents the digital value in circuit 17 and this frequency signal is converted to an analogue voltage in averaging circuit 18. This reference voltage is compared with the analogue input 10 in comparator 11 and the output is integrated at 30 up to either a positive value (trigger 32) or a negative value (trigger 33) depending on the comparator output polarity. The positive trigger output is applied to the add input of adder/subtractor 16. The outputs of both triggers pass to OR gate 34 and thence to AND gate 35 which on receipt of a pulse indicating that the least significant figure of the digital value is in the adder/subtractor, resets the integrator and enables the adder/subtractor so that one is either added to or subtracted from the digital value depending on whether there is an input signal or not respectively. The digital value is thus updated at a rate proportional to the comparator output. In an alternative embodiment both digital and analogue signals are converted to frequency significant pulse trains and are applied to the down and up inputs respectively of a counter acting as comparator.
