Abstract
1348189 Soil fumigant injection apparatus GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORP 28 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 11931/71 Headings AID and A1E A soil fumigant injection auger 20 has a shaft 15 with an axial conduit 26 communicating with at least one exhaust orifice 19. The shaft carries three “zones” of helicordal blades comprising a tip zone 411 for entering unbroken soil and may comprise a single blade 11 of shallow pitch, a second zone for widening the entry and conveying the soil upward and which may comprise two blades 12, 13 180‹ apart on the shaft and of steeper pitch than blade 11 and a zone comprising a blade 14 of steeper pitch than blades 12, 13 and capable of moving soil upward or downward depends on the direction of auger rotation or of holding soil between its turns to thereby seal the passageway formed by the other zones. A mobile soil fumigant injection apparatus, incorporating the auger, includes a hollow extensible extension shaft 17, collar chuck 18 connected to drill head 226a and auger drive means 24 which may be hydraulically operated. Coupling device 22 connects conduit 26 to fumigant feed system 50 which feeds fumigant e.g. methyl bromide liquid by means of inert gas e.g. nitrogen in cylinder 51 from fumigant tank 64, dispenser 66 through the auger into the soil. Lowering and raising of the injector 10 incorporating the auger is achieved by hydraulic cylinder 217 acting between frame 214, 215 and bar 221 movably mounted on tracks and on which rotate sprocket wheels 223. Chains 224 connected to fixed brackets at one end and at the other to a guided carriage 225 carrying the auger, pass around sprocket wheels 223 and movement of piston 220 imparts movement by this system to the auger. The apparatus may be flushed with water from tank 60. If methyl bromide gel is used as a fumigant it is fed from reservoir 75. In operation, the auger is moved downwards into the soil and rotated clockwise, then withdrawn partly while still rotating to form a subterranean chamber. Rotation is stopped and fumigant injected into the chamber. The auger is then rotated anti-clockwise and withdrawn thus sealing the chamber.
