Abstract
1348377 Feeding strip; rolling WEAN UNITED Inc 11 June 1971 [13 July 1970] 33842/70 Headings B3A and B3M A strip feeding apparatus for a rolling mill 10 comprises an uncoiler 52 from which a strip is fed away from the mill through a welding unit 70 to a strip accumulator 75 which stores the strip so that it can be fed continuously to the mill when the trailing end is clamped so that the leading end of the next coil can be welded thereto. The strip is fed from the accumulator through a tension bridle 82 and over a tension wheel 24 which is removable so that the axle 23 can be used to support a coil when the apparatus is used for feeding coils individually, Fig. 3. The mill is preceded by a holding shelf unit 15 with pinch rolls and a snip shear. Each coil is fed to the apparatus by a carriage 39 which supports the coil on rollers 42. The leading end of the strip is fed through a three roll bender unit 33 or 35 to a holding shelf unit 32 or 56. The shelf unit 32 or 56 feeds the strip to pinch rolls and then the carriage 39 moves the coil in line with one of the axially retracted shafts 23, 52 depending on whether the apparatus is to be used for rolling one strip or for continuous rolling. For continuous rolling the strip is fed through a leveller 67, guide rolls 69, up-cut shear 68 and a pinch roll unit 71 to the welding unit 70. The welding unit 70 includes a flash welder and a corner notcher to remove flash. The strip from the welding unit is stored in the accumulator until there is sufficient strip to allow continuous withdrawal to the mill even when no strip is being fed into the accumulator. In a similar embodiment, Figs. (4a)-(4c) (not shown), the accumulator comprises a set of horizontally movable carriages (116) with rolls (115) urged rightwards by winches (118). The strip is delivered to a tension unit (119) adjacent the mill. In a final embodiment, Fig. 5, the strips are fed alternately from pay-off reels 127, 128 which are movable axially so that a coil can be positioned to receive a reel. This embodiment has an accumulator of the type used in the earlier embodiments.
