Abstract

1349938 Graft polymerization process BP CHEMICALS Ltd 1 Oct 1971 [19 Oct 1970] 49548/70 Heading C3G A graft polymerization process comprises polymerizing a solution of a rubber in a vinyl aromatic monomer until phase inversion has occurred, forming a dispersion of the product in the presence of a surfactant and a trialkali metal orthophosphate, subsequently precipitating in the dispersion a substantially water-insoluble inorganic phosphate and continuing the polymerization under suspension polymerization conditions. In the examples, (a) a solution of polybutadiene and polystyrene in styrene was mixedwith water, benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, heated and stirred until phase inversion occurred, whereupon mineral oil and butyl stearate were added, followed by sodium nonyl phosphate, trisodium orthophosphate dodecahydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate to yield a dispersion which was stabilized by addition of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, whereupon calcium hydroxy apatite was precipitated; and (b) the solution as in (a) was mixed with water, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate and the said peroxides, the resulting mixture was heated and stirred until phase inversion occurred, butyl stearate and water were added, followed by a further amount of said sulphonate, trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate and disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate to yield a dispersion which was stabilized as in (a). Calcium chloride may be used in place of the nitrate. 1009027 Magnetic recording medium GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. 18 April 1963 [30 April 1962] 15321/63 Index C3R 3R27 L4H C6X C13M C12 C9B C25 C8R C8P C10 L5A L5X A recording medium comprises a substrate coated with a dispersion of magnetic particles in a film-forming binder, and the substrate or binder is a polycondensate mainly consisting of a polybisphenol ester of either an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or fumaric acid. The polycondensate may also include aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids and other dihydroxy compounds such as aliphatic or cycloaliphatic glycols or diphenols which do not affect significantly the characteristics of the ester. An embodiment using an aromatic acid has 80% of its units: and 20%: An embodiment using fumaric acid is Specifications 883312 and 975813 are referred to.
