Abstract
1353757 Burning drill cuttings DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 26497/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division E1] A drilling rig 11 on legs 13 carries a sieve 26 which removes drill cuttings from the mud delivered by tube 25 and feeds them to a hopper 31 from which they fall to a submerged furnace 33 where they are burnt. A trap 35 below the furnace and conveyer belt 36 enables samples of the burnt cuttings to be tested on the rig. The cuttings from the hopper 31 are supplied through an air lock 41 and valve 43, Fig. 2, to a basket 50 supported within the furnace 33, and incinerated with the aid of burners 62. An hydraulically operated piston opens the bottom of the basket 50 to allow the burnt cuttings to fall. A heat sensor 70 on the air lock 41 operates an alarm if it becomes overheated, and simultaneously floods the combustion chamber by opening a valve 74, and cuts off the fuel and air supply pumps. A heat sensor 77 on the combustion chamber controls the fuel/air ratio, and vibrators 85, 86 prevent the cuttings sticking in the air lock or basket. In a modification, the cuttings are fed down a series of superimposed hearths having staggered openings and rabble arms. (For Figures see next page.)
