Abstract

1353790 Jointing by stamping AMERICAN FLANGE & MFG CO Inc 23 Dec 1971 [14 Jan 1971] 60059/71 Heading B3Q Closure flanges 47, Fig. 10, are fed to an anvil 56 which co-operates with a curling anvil 60, Fig. 13, to secure the flanges in container wall openings 55 by apparatus comprising a slide 7, Fig. 1, reciprocably movable on a base 1 by a piston and cylinder assembly 3, a flange receiving member 33 mounted on the slide for relative movement thereto, a shoot 43 for feeding flanges to the member 33 when the slide is in a retracted position, and a spring-biased presser 36 overlying the member 33 and operatively connected to the assembly 3 such that when the slide is in a fully advanced position a flange is urged downwardly on to the anvil 56. In operation a closure flange is fed down the shoot 43 on to the member 33 where it is received in pockets 15 is arms 13 and 14 of the slide. The piston-rod 5 of the assembly 3 is then advanced causing the slide 7, the member 33 and the presser 36 to move towards the anvil 56. As the slide advances a guide 17 prevents entry of a following flange from the shoot 43 on to the member 33. As the piston-rod continues its movement, Fig. 10, stop nuts 24 on rods 22 contact a wall 2 and terminate the movement of the member 33. However the slide 7 continues to advance causing the downwardly spring- biased presser 36 to move into contact with the top of the flange due to the engagement of cams 42 and 35. On completion of the piston-rod stroke, the pockets 15 are vertically aligned with the anvil 56 and the flange is pulled off the member 33 and urged on to the anvil by the presser 36. The piston-rod is then retracted and the anvil 60 lowered to force the flange base against the anvil 56 and the container wall 53 to depress a compression ring 57. Continued downward movement of the anvil 60 curls the upper part 51 of the flange outwardly about the upper end of the wall opening 55.
