Abstract

1353808 Grinding GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY Inc 24 Aug 1971 [26 Feb 1971] 39619/71 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions B4-B5] An apparatus for cutting sheet material 1 comprises a rotary abrasive cutting disc 16 driven by a motor 82, means 20, 22, 26, 28 for moving the tool relative to a penetrable bed 62 providing a supporting surface 64 for the material to be cut; and means 96, 130 for positioning the cutting tool along a line 94 generally normal to the work surface with a segment of the peripheral cutting edge of the disc extending below the work surface into the penetrable bed. The cutting disc 16 is rotated by an electric motor 82 mounted on a bracket 100 which is secured to a sleeve 96 slidable on a shaft 92. The shaft is supported by a bracket 88 secured to a carriage 22 which is movable by a feed screw 34 along a main carriage 20, the drive of both carriages being controlled by a computer 36. The cutting disc is raised or lowered in order to compensate for undulations in the level of the material by means of a foot 130 secured to the sleeve 96 and provided with a curved base 138 for contact with the material under the action of a spring 142, Figs. 2 and 3. In order to orientate the cutting disc into the correct direction dependent upon the movement of both carriages 20, 22, the shaft 92 is rotated by means of a motor 110, via a toothed belt-and-gear drive 112, 114, 116, and a pin-and-plate coupling device 118, 120, 122. The penetrable bed 63 may be formed from a foamed plastics material supported on a grid 60 and connected to a vacuum source 70; where the material to be cast is porous, a sheet 76 of impervious material, e.g. plastics, is laid over the material to be cut. In a modification, the penetrable foamed plastics bed may be replaced by a bristles (164), Fig. 5 (not shown). In further modifications, the cutting disc may be driven by a flexible drive shaft (210), Fig. 8 (not shown) instead of the motor 82.
