Abstract
1354295 Moulding foamed article GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 23 March 1971 7561/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for moulding foamed articles such as automobile crash pads includes means for moving a series of moulds 12 between mould filling and article removing stations. Series of moulds 12 are supported on interconnected chains of carriages 8 that run on parallel tracks 10. The carriages 8 are movable by a pulley and motor system 27. A filling nozzle 16 fed by tubes 22 from a material store 21 is movable between sets of tracks 6, 7 on an overhead beam 18. At the start of an operation, a number of moulds 12, each containing a preformed skin, are positioned on the carriages 8 which are stationary at one extreme of the tracks 10. The filling nozzle 16 is positioned by a hand rail 17 above the centre of track 7 and a button 24 pressed to start the pulley and motor system 27 and move the carriages 8 along the track 7. When the leading carriage 8 reaches the filling station, a projecting arm 13 engages an arm 14 on the filling nozzle 16 to carry the nozzle along with it a short distance on an overhead bar (38) (see Fig. 4, not reproduced; not shown in Fig. 2); (alternatively, the mould 12 remains stationary for a period). The carriage 8 simultaneously closes a switch (35) (Fig. 3, not reproduced) to initiate mould filling with the required quantity of foam. The machine operator then swings the nozzle 16 to disengage the arms 13, 14, closes the mould 12, and the process is repeated for successive moulds. When all moulds have been filled, the leading mould contacts a switch (32) (Fig. 3) to reverse the motor and pulley system 27 to feed the moulds back to their starting positions. Simultaneously, the filling nozzle 16 is moved to a position over the track 6 to fill a second series of moulds. The motor and pulley system 27 is stopped by a further switch (34) (Fig. 3) and the cured articles removed from the moulds 12. The preformed skin is formed by hot melt moulding, vacuum forming, or centrifugal moulding in apparatus described in U.S. Patent 3,506,755. The skin comprises polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, copolymers of polyvinyl (chloride and acetate), ABS, polyvinyl alcohol, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, or copolymer of (polyvinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride). The body of the article comprises a polyurethane foam. Methods of preparing the skin and body materials are described.
