Abstract
1354368 Feeding sheets BURROUGHS CORP 17 June 1971 [6 July 1970] 28383/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division B6] A machine for handling documents having a machine readable portion thereon, e.g. a selective printing machine having a printing head 36 and platen 34 for printing selected lines of a business form 50, has at least one gripper movable in opposite directions along a guide track, means for keeping taut a document moved back and forth by said gripper and a transducer means operable to read the machine readable portion. Two grippers may be provided one on each of two carriages 48 underslung on two parallel tracks 44 the inclination of which may be adjustable. The carriages are reciprocable along the tracks by a reversible motor 80 which drives a shaft 46 on which are wound cables 58 attached to the carriages. The position of the grippers on their tracks, and hence the line of the business form at the printing position, is sensed by a photo-electric cell which counts the slots in a slotted disc 88 on drive shaft 46. The shaft is stopped in correct position by a solenoid operated clapper (102), Fig. 20 (not shown), and pawl (104) which engage a toothed wheel 96 on the shaft. In operation, as a document 50 is inserted into the throat of the machine its leading edge trips a vane (266), Fig. 25 (not shown), which blocks light to a photo-cell thereby actuating feed rollers 125. At the same time the gripper carriages are urged to their end position causing the grippers to be opened by the action of a roller (168), Fig. 9 (not shown), on a cam track or by a lever system, Fig. 17 (not shown), for reception of the document leading edge which is sensed by a second photo-cell (240), Fig. 25, activating motor 80 which drives the grippers to pull the document into the machine with the aid of the feed rollers 125 which rotate relatively slowly and co-operate with a guide 231 to keep the document taut. During this insertion magnetic information carriers 54 on the document are read by the transducer (56), Fig. 4 (not shown), the line position information thereon being stored so that during subsequent movement of the grippers in the eject direction, the document can be stopped at appropriate positions for printing. During this movement rollers 125 again keep the document taut by relatively fast rotation. The document is then moved in the insert direction again, then ejected during which time updated information is applied to the magnetic carriers by the transducer. Alternatively, printing may occur during the first insert movement.
