Abstract

1354555 Thermoelectric devices WOOL INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 16 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 39745/71 Heading H1K [Also in Division G1] The temperature of a moving web 24 is sensed by a device comprising a pivoted support 12 on which is suspended a metallic leaf 28 which is thermally isolated from the support 12 and is in thermal contact with a temperature sensing element 30. The element may comprise a thermocouple, thermistor or resistance thermometer and is thermally shielded by a polished metal plate 36 which may support a second temperature sensing element 50 in contact with a leaf 50 covered by wet fabric 52 so that the element 50 gives an output determined by the wet-bulb temperature of the environment. In operation, the web 24, which may be in a drying chamber, is in contact with the leaf 28, the element 30 monitoring the temperature of the drying web. If the wet-bulb temperature is also monitored, the difference in the two temperatures will give an indication of the moisture content of the web 24, which can be displayed and/or used to control the heating of the drying chamber. In a modification, there is provided provision for continuous withdrawal of air from the support 12 through a porous or perforated support fabric 26. In a further modification, the support 12 is filled with heat insulating material. The device may also be provided with counterbalancing means which minimizes the weight of the device on the web 24.
