Abstract

1354647 Vibrators F GARTNER 15 Sept 1972 [20 July 1972] 43014/72 Heading F2X A vibrator comprises a nutating inertia disc 7 mounted inside a cavity 4 within a easing 1, 2, the cavity 4 being defined by a concave spherical surface 8 and by inwardly projecting lower and upper coaxial conical surfaces 5, 6 which serve to guide the disc 7. An inlet 10 positioned in a wall of the casing directs a working fluid, e.g. compressed air, into the cavity 4 along a path lying substantially in the plane of symmetry of the nutating movement of the disc 7 to impinge upon the disc and cause its nutating movement, while outlet means comprising, e.g. a row of channels 11 distributed along the line of intersection of the conical and spherical surfaces 5 and 8, conduct the working fluid out from the cavity 4. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, the disc 7 is maintained in an inclined position by ballended rods 14, 15 which engage, with their ballends 16, 17 respectively, hemispherical recesses 18, 19 centrally located in the opposite faces of the disc 7. The rods themselves are received within coaxial conical recesses 12, 13 in the apices of the conical surfaces 5, 6. When a jet of working fluid impinges on one or other surface of the disc 7, the disc 7 is caused to roll upon the conical surfaces 5, 6 with its axis performing a nutating movement about the axis of symmetry of the cavity 4. Alternative forms of disc are a simple disc with no central recesses (Fig. 3, not shown) and discs provided with ball bearing means (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). With any of these alternative forms, the disc 7 when at rest may obstruct the inlet 10 and in order to overcome the resultant difficulty in starting the vibrator, the disc 7 (as shown in Fig. 7) has its periphery chamfered at 26 to a line edge and the inlet 10 has a channel 27 extending into the casing element 2. The channel 27 results in more fluid being deflected upwardly than downwardly which causes the disc 7 to tilt out of alignment with the inlet 10 and to commence its nutating movement.
