1354795 Emulsifying apparatus ALFA-LAVAL BERGEDORFER EISENWERKE GmbH 17 Sept 1971 [19 Sept 1970] 43509/71 Heading B1C Apparatus for homogensing a liquid containing a dispersed immiscible phase comprises an annular passage 2 through which liquid is forced inwardly under conditions causing cavitation. As described the gap has coaxial annular grooves 6 in at least one face and by suitable dimensioning cavitation is caused in the ungrooved zones, the cavities collapsing in the grooves with intense homogenising action. The grooves are preferably closer together towards the axis. As the crosssection of the flow decreases inwardly, the pressure in each succeeding non-grooved zone will be lower than in the preceding one with successive cavitation effects. A conventional shearing nozzle 8 is preferably disposed upstream of the annular gap to effect prehomogenisation.
