Abstract

1354845 Control of A.C. motors HOLZER PATENT AG 29 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 9300/72 Heading H2J [Also in Division G3] An electric motor 2, which may be the drive motor of a washing machine or the pump motor of a dish-washing machine, is connected in series with a power consuming device 1 such as a heating resistor of the machine and in parallel with a controlled electronic switch 3 such as a Triac. The switch is controlled by a firing circuit 5 responsive to a motor speed signal provided by a tacho-alternator 8 or by the back EMF of the motor and to the signal provided by a programme controller 7. The motor speed may thus be maintained at a desired value, which may be changed by the controller 7 in accordance with the signal provided by a level switch or thermostat 4 or directly by the latter signal if it is supplied to the firing circuit 5, Fig. 1b (not shown). The motor receives D.C. in one or other direction to produce corresponding directions of rotation, the A.C. supply from the mains 6 being controlled by the switch 3 so that the latter passes complete half cycles of one polarity and partial half cycles of the other polarity, Figs. 1c and 1d (not shown). A programme unit (not shown) controls a further switch 17 controlling the members 1, 2, 3. The motor may have a series field, further terminals being provided to allow the connection of winding. Fig. 2 (not shown), this embodiment and subsequent others obtaining reversal of the motor by mechanical contacts controlled by the member 7. The subsequent other embodiments describe (1) the replacement of Triac 3 by an anti-parallel connected diode and thyristor, Fig. 3 (not shown); (2) the use of a flywheel diode connected to the mechanical reversing contacts, Fig. 4 (not shown); (3) the use of a bridge of rectifiers with the motor across one diagonal and the Triac across the other, Fig. 5 (not shown), or with the motor and a thyristor across the same (output) diagonal, Fig. 6 (not shown) or with a thyristor and the resistor 1 across this output diagonal, the motor being in parallel with the thyristor, Fig. 7 (not shown); (4) the use of an anti-parallel connected diode and thyristor with additional contacts to enable the motor to be operated when the heating resistor 1 is operated at reduced power, Fig. 8 (not shown).
