Abstract

1355557 Selective signalling HOUSTON NATURAL GAS CORP 2 July 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 31035/71 Heading G4H A digital encoding transducer which measures the angular position of rotatable geared shafts 14, Fig. 2, representing successive decades of a register (e.g. for a gas meter), incorporates means for detecting and correcting positional errors in the decade readings. Attached to each shaft are brushes 62-72 which coact with a switch pattern A-E, G (ground) to generate a five bit code (for each decade in turn) which represents thirty angular positions 01-911. The segments are arranged so that the change in code between adjacent positions is one bit and so that each brush contacts only one segment at a time. The positions include ten numbered positions 0-9 each having two interface positions (e.g. 01, 011) which are angularly less than 10% thereof but greater than the positional errors. Such errors may be caused when a brush either leads or lags with respect to its correct position (Fig. 6): as the brushes 84 read off the values 0-9 from a decade, corresponding brushes 86 on the next higher decade move across a numbered position NH and its interface positions NH1, NH11. Since these latter are less than 10% of NH, a misplaced brush 86 will only give rise to an incorrect reading when brush 84 is traversing positions 01, 0, 011 and 91, 9, 911 (the incorrect reading being the result of a lagging and a leading brush respectively). To remove such an error the signals are decoded and stored in an appropriate memory, and the uncorrected higher order signals …, NH1, NH, NH11, … are fed to the circuit of Fig. 4, which includes NOR gates 147 &c., and NOR gates 149 &c. which are enabled by a signal 126, 127 or 128, according as the position read by the lower decade is in the range 1-8 (when no correction is necessary) or is 0 or 9. The resulting signal from NOR gate 140 &c. then represents the higher decade signal corrected in the light of the particular lower decade -signal which obtains, so that the positional errors are eliminated from one decade to the next. The correction procedure operates from the lowest to the highest decade, and a special procedure is built in (Fig. 4A, not shown) for processing the lowest decade signal, which is always assumed to be correct.
