Abstract

1357799 Delta modulation systems DACOM Inc 14 July 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 32977/71 Heading G4H In a system for converting analogue input into differential coded signals and transmitting them to a receiver which reconstructs the analogue, the encoder, Fig. 3, produces at 28 a string of binary l’s and 0’s according to the sign of the difference between the analogue input 18 and a feedback signal 22 comprised of a first component, stored at C2, equal to the value the feedback signal had the last time the difference changed sign, and a second component derived by connecting a resistor chain 46 to a positive or negative potential in accordance with whether the output at 28 is 1 or 0 and sequentially closing switches 1, 2, 3 … n until the difference next changes sign whereupon shift register 42 is reset and switches S 1 , S 2 , 50 operated to begin a new cycle. The resistors in chain 46 are selected to give the feedback signal an S-shaped characteristic. The decoder, Fig. 6, comprises a shift register 70 through which the received encoded signal is stepped and an adaptive filter 74 which is alternately connected to a positive and a negative bandedge potential, changeover occurring whenever the two oldest bits (positions 0 and 1 of the register 70) are different, one of resistors R a , R b … R n being selected in accordance with how many next consecutive bits in register 70 are the same as the bit in position 1 to control the rate at which capacitor 76 charges or discharges towards the selected bandedge potential. The analogue input may be a T.V. video signal or a radar signal. The transmission link may include a recorder the playback speed of which is automatically controlled in dependence on the fullness of a buffer store.
