Abstract

1359933 Nacreous pigments E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 24 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13910/72 Heading C4A A nacreous pigment comprises a non-opaque mica flake substrate with a translucent layer of metal oxide deposited thereon, the metal oxide layer being predominantly hydrous or non- hydrous rutile TiO 2 , at least some of the particles of which are nucleated on hydrous or non- hydrous tin oxide, the concentration of tin oxide in the layer being greater in the region immediately adjacent the substrate. The tin oxide or hydrous tin oxide may constitute 0À1-20% by wt. of the metal oxide layer. The pigment is produced by acidifying a dispersion of mica flake in a tin salt solution containing Sn+4 ions and simultaneously or subsequently adding an aqueous acidic solution of titanyl sulphate, followed by hydrolysis of the titanyl sulphate by heating to a temperature at which hydrous TiO 2 particles deposit on the mica substrate, the amount of acid added initially being sufficient to peptize the tin compound but insufficient to precipitate TiO 2 . A final surface coating of a further metal oxide, e.g. chromium or iron oxide, may be applied. The mica flake substrate may be 5-100 microns in a major dimension and 0À05-3 microns thick. The coated flakes may be calcined, e.g. at 700- 1000‹ C.
