Abstract
1360154 Knitting-machines APPALACHIAN ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS Inc 20 Nov 1972 [19 April 1972] 53471/72 Heading DIC [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for monitoring the lengths of yarn supplied from the beams of a warp machine comprises means for marking the yarns, and course counters started and stopped by spaced detectors. The yarns may be marked by electrically conductive or magnetic solutions, and detected appropriately. Alternatively a visible or fluorescent mark may be detected photoelectrically. In the preferred embodiment three yarns 15A-C pass to a marking device 17 via guides 13. All three yarns are marked by pressing against a pad soaked in a conducting liquid. When the yarns pass detectors 10A-C the course counters begin to run. A fourth course counter is started and set to run for one minute, second detectors 12A-C, which will stop the counters, are spaced along a scale 11, at distances corresponding to the amount of yarn expected to be used during one rack. Revolutions of the main shaft are detected by a magnetic reed switch. The counter readings indicate the number of courses in a rack, if the yarns are running correctly. The detectors comprise cross arms 10W, 10W’ set close together so that passage of a yarn completes a circuit between them. Start detectors are connected via amplifiers to one input of multivibrators (FF1-3, Figs. 1A, B not shown). Stop detectors are similarly connected to the other inputs. The outputs, which go high once start detectors have been activated are connected via AND gates to multivibrators (SS1-3). Course counting pulses also supplied to the AND gate will pass via the multivibrators to the counters (CB1-3). Once the counts are completed, detectors 10A-C are deactivated to prevent further, false, counting. They are reactivated at the start of a new count.
