Abstract
1360232 Cutting reinforced sheet glass PILKINGTON BROS Ltd M E GRAY D W WHITTAKER and D APPLETON 8 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 7487/71 Heading C1M To cut reinforced glass sheet having elongated reinforcing members extending across the cutting line, the glass material is cut along the required line and subsequently the reinforcing members are severed by effecting relative movement between the two parts on either side of the cutting line in a direction parallel to the cutting line and in the plane of the sheet material, the relative movement being effected in two opposite directions. Preferably repeated vibratory movement is used. As disclosed for cutting lengths off a continuously advancing ribbon 11 of reinforced glass sheet material, the ribbon 11 is fed by conveyer rollers 10 past a digitizer 12 with rubber covered wheel driven by friction from the ribbon 11 and indicating extent of movement; past a detector 13 with roller 14 mounted pivotally just above the surface and operable by irregularities of surface to operate a microswitch 15 and thence to a cutter 16 or 17. As shown, cutter 16 has a cutting wheel 18 movable along a fixed support 19 angled so that a straight, transverse, score line is produced and the alternative cutter 17 has a cutter wheel 20 movable across a frame 21 which is adapted to be moved with the ribbon 11 during cutting. After the score line has been formed by cutter 16 or 17, the ribbon 11 is moved past a snapping, rubber covered, roller 22 cantilevered on a shaft 23 below the ribbon 11 and the roller 22 is raised by an hydraulic piston device 24 when the score line is immediately above roller 22 to break open the score line to give a cut 25 across which the reinforcing wires extend. The ribbon 11 then moves past a vibration shearing device 26. Shearing.-The device 26 includes a first pair of rollers 27, 28 and spaced second pair of rollers 29, 30, the lower rollers 28, 30 being continuously driven from drive shafts 34, 35 which also drive the conveyer rollers 10. The upstream roller 28 is driven at the same speed as rollers 10 and the roller 30 at a slightly higher speed so that the surfaces of the cut 25 are slightly spaced, the rollers 28, 30 being at all times in contact with the ribbon 11. Rollers 27 and 29 are freely rotatable and mounted for vertical movement about pivotal supports 33 to clamp the ribbon either side of cut 25 by hydraulic cylinders 31, 32. The cylinders 31, 32 are arranged to give a half inch downward movement for clamping the ribbon or a three inch upward movement when an irregularity of the glass is detected by roller 14 of detector 13 so that the rollers 27, 29 are moved out of their normal quarter inch position above the glass. The upward movement can also be effected manually from a control panel. Rollers 27, 28 have no axial movement, but rollers 29, 30 are given axial movement as well as rotary movement by an oil hydraulic vibration actuator 37 coupled through a transmission unit 39 which has tall bearing unit 40 on bottom roller 30 rigidly connected to actuator 37 and ball bearing unit 41 on upper roller 29 connected to unit 40 by a forked tongue 42 engaging a slot 43 on both sides of unit 40. Vibration to the drive system 36 for rollers 29, 30 is minimized by incorporation of a resilient rubber coupling 47 between the drive shaft 44 and reduction gearbox 46. The reinforced glass may have the wires parallel to and perpendicular to the edges of the ribbon or angled thereto, in which case a greater shearing face is required. To allow for this, and for variations of thickness of wire, or number of wires the vibration actuator is servo controlled to give a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes of vibration.
