Abstract

1360442 Automatic electric control INDUSTRIAL NUCLEONICS CORP 19 April 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 20267/71 Heading G3N A grade change on a fibrous sheet being produced by a machine is automatically carried out in response to a command in accordance with a calculated trajectory determined from weight parameters before and after the change and the time for the change. As shown, slurry is fed to a head-box 31 through a valve 32 controlled by an actuator 34. The actual slurry flow rate being determined by a feedback controller 45 positioning valves 37, 39. The slurry from a slice opening 47 collects on a Fourdrinier wire 48, driven at constant speed by a controller 53. The formed sheet is taken from the wire to a drier 57 the steam supply to which is controlled by a valve 59 responsive to a signal from a digital-to-analog converter 115. The dried sheet is monitored by a capacitive moisture gauge 67 and a nucleonic weight gauge before being wound on a coil 66. The outputs of gauges 67, 68 are combined in a circuit 73 to derive a signal indicative of fibre weight per unit area of sheet, which is fed to a computing network 111 together with set-point signals indicative of derived bone-dry weight and moisture from circuits 112, 113 and slurry flow and sheet velocity from circuits 46, 52. The network 111 provides output set-point signals to control the actuator 34 and supply the digitalto-analog converter 115. The set-point signals and primary control signals fed through AND-gates 114, 116 as determined by a process computer 121 having a stored program for deriving set-point changes which is set out in detail in the Specification. A memory 122 contains empirically determined relationship between bone-dry basis weight, moisture, head-box level and sheet velocity which are retrieved in response to a grade selection at source 125 made by an operator. Transition between grades is effected by the computer to avoid transient disturbances.
