Abstract

1360640 Spraying fusible materials, testing filters UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 24 Aug 1971 [28 May 1971] 18206/71 Headings BIT and B2F [Also in Division C1] Apparatus for producing an aerosol stream of an inorganic compound of an element comprises a duct 1, Fig. 1, into which a flammable gas is admitted to mix with a compound introduced through an inlet 10, the resulting mixture being ignited at a nozzle 17 disposed within an enclosure 20, Fig. 2, in which the mixture cools and the compound condenses to be removed with the gas from the enclosure 20 as an aerosol stream. The compound, which may be in powder or solution form, introduced through inlet 10, may be inorganic or such that on condensing an inorganic compound is formed. As shown common salt from a hopper 18 passes through a rotatable varied cylinder 13 to provide a constant flow rate, and flows through a duct 16 to the inlet 10, while an oxyacetylene mixture enters an inlet 5 through valve controlled inlets 6, 7. The aerosol stream is withdrawn from the enclosure 20 through a steel mesh 29 by an extractor fan 22 and passes into a T-shaped duct 23 for, e.g. subsequent passage to an air filter to be tested. The cylinder 13 is driven by an electric motor which may be of variable speed. The enclosure 20 preferably has an opening through which air is drawn by the extractor 22 to assist cooling of the gas/ compound mixture. A flow meter 27 is also provided. A filter undergoing a penetration test is subjected to an aerosol stream produced in the apparatus, from a compound of a metal selected from the group consisting of the alkali metals, the alkaline earth metals and zinc, e.g. common salt, the effluent stream leaving the filter being subjected to flame photometric analysis to determine the penetration of the filter. The flame photometer is coupled to the upstream and downstream sides of the filter under test, changeover being effected by a quick-acting valve. The spray apparatus and flame photometer may be mounted on separate trolleys for the in situ testing of filters in an installation.
