Abstract
1362964 Anti-skid braking system MULLARD Ltd 27 July 1971 35321/71 Heading F2F An electronic control circuit for anti-lock vehicle brake system is operable to energize a solenoid valve mechanism of the system to relieve braking pressure in response to wheel deceleration being in excess of a reference value and is further operable following energization of the solenoid valve mechanism to vary said reference value progressively in a positive sense and to hold the solenoid valve mechanism energized until the rate of change of wheel speed attains a particular relationship with the varying reference value, said control circuit being responsive for its operation to an input signal which varies as a function of rate of change of wheel speed. In the block diagram shown there is a pick-up PU which produces a train of pulses whose frequency is proportional to the speed of rotation of a wheel W the pulse train being applied to an element LAM which consists of a limiter amplifier for the pulse train followed by a monostable element so that the output of element LAM is a train of constant width pulses the width of which is approximately 200 microseconds and the frequency of which varies over a range of 50 cycles to 1000 cycles per second; the output from element LAM is applied to a pulse generator element PG which produces an output pulse for each pulse received from element LAM the pulses from the element PG having a duration of one millisecond so that at or above the normal maximum input frequency of 1000 cycles per second the output from the element PG is a constant voltage equal to the normal pulse amplitude. The output of the element PG is applied to a waveform generator element WG which sets the pulse so that its output is a voltage which for each pulse varies as a function of the time since the last pulse. The output of the element WG is applied to a speed signal output element SS whose output is a voltage the value of which is a function of the input pulse frequency from the pick-up PU; the elements LAM, PG, WG and SS constitute a frequency to D.C. converter and the voltage output from the element SS changes its value in the series of steps when the input pulse frequency changes. The output from the element SS is applied to a detector element DD which differentiates this output and produces a train of output pulses whenever the speed signal voltage changes its value at a rate in excess of the reference rate which is fed into the detector element DD from a reference control element RC. The train of output pulses from the detector element DD are applied to a bi-stable element BE which is also fed with one millisecond pulses from the generator element PG, the element BE produces a constant output capable for turning on a power output stage POS whenever the detector element DD produces the train of pulses; the pulses from the generator element PG continually attempt to reset bi-stable element BE to terminate its output and do so each time the pulses from the detector element DD cease. When the stage POS is turned on, its output energizes a solenoid valve mechanism SV which relieves braking pressure and the stage POS also activates an automatic turn-off element AT which turns off the stage POS after a preset time independently of the output from the bi-stable element BE; a further output from the stage POS is applied to the element RC to modify the reference rate fed into the detector DD. Circuit diagrams for the various elements are shown in the Specification.
