Abstract

1363313 Polyesters STANDARD OIL CO 16 Sept 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 43258/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A resin comprises the polycondensation reaction product of: (a) a benzene tricarbonylaffording compound, (b) a saturated or monoolefinic dicarbonyl-affording compound having 3-6 carbon atoms, (c) a benzene dicarbonylaffording compound, and (d) a polyol which is a C 3 -C 6 triol or a C 2 -C 6 glycol selected from alkylene glycols and ether glycols, the reaction product being prepared by heating (a), (b), (c) and (d) at 300-150‹ F. until a sample of the reaction product cures, when smeared on a surface held at 392‹ F., in a time of from 10-40 seconds, wherein (a) and (b) are present in a respective mole ratio of 3 : 1 to 1 : 3, (c) is present in an amount of from 0 to 2 moles per mole of (a) and the amount of (d) is from 105 to 150 mole per cent of the amount required to react with the carbonyl groups of (a), (b) and (c), the reaction products having an acid number of 30 to 120. The resin may be used for binding glass fibres and is substantially styrene-permeable and substantially styrene-insoluble. The examples describe preparing resins from trimellitic acid anhydride, propylene glycol and maleic anhydride or adipic acid, optionally with isophthalic acid.
