Abstract

1363506 Penicillins ASTRA LAKEMEDEL AB 15 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970 20 Nov 1970] 43090/71 Heading C2A The invention comprises compounds of structural Formula I and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof,; wherein R is an alkyl group containing two to seven carbon atoms; a radical of Formula II wherein R2 is H or OH and R3 is H or halogen; or a radical of formula and wherein R1 represents a group of formula where R4 represents an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R5 represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl. A process for preparing compounds of Formula I comprises reacting compounds of Formula VIII wherein A is amino, substituted amino or a group which is convertible into an amino group and R11 represents hydrogen or a cation with a compound of formula X-R1 wherein X represents halogen or a functionally equivalent group to give a compound of Formula IX if necessary the group A is converted to’ amino and, if desired, the free base is converted to a salt by reaction with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid. An alternative process for preparing compounds of Formula I comprises reacting compounds of formula with compounds of Formula XI to give compounds of Formula IX, in which formula -CO-Y1 and X1-NH- represent groups which react together to form a -CONH- linkage; if necessary the group A is converted into an amino group and, if desired, the free base is converted to a salt by reaction with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid. The compounds of Formula IX wherein A is azido have been prepared by the abovementioned alternative process. The preparation and use as intermediates of compounds of structural Formula XI where X1 is H are described. Pharmaceutical preparations comprise, as an active ingredient at least one compound of Formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. A method for the treatment of infectious diseases in animals other than man comprises administering to a host suffering from such a disease a therapeutically acceptable amount of a compound of Formula I or Formula IX where A is azido, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
