Abstract

1365364 Aqueous polymer latices B F GOODRICH CO 10 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 42310/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] An aqueous polymer latex contains a polymer which comprises 45 to 94% by weight, based on the total monomers, of (a) one or more monomers of the formula or a vinyl ester of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical contaming from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 is a hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R2 is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a mixture of these monomers, polymerized with from 5 to 35% by weight of (b) at least one monomer of the formula wherein X is chlorine, bromine or fluorine and Y is hydrogen or chlorine, bromine or fluorine; 1 to 3% by weight of (c) at least one α,#- olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms or anhydride thereof; and from 1 to 3% by weight of (d) at least one N-alkylol amide and/or at least one N-alkoxyalkyl amide of the formula wherein R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R4 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 1 to 4. An article capable of being cured at low temperatures may be formed by treating a substrate with the latex. In the examples ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, N-methylolacrylamide, vinyl chloride, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, ethoxyethyl acrylate and vinyl acetate are copolymerized in the presence of water, sodium sulphate, potassium persulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate, mercaptan modifier, nonylphenoxy poly-(ethyleneoxy) ethanol, straight chain divinylbenzene sodium sulphonate and tetrasodiumpyrophosphate. Paper and fabric wall covering are saturated with the latices and cured.
