Abstract

1365397 Transistor circuits for switching inductive loads CENTRONICS DATA COMPUTER CORP 13 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 17625/73 Heading H5T The coils of the solenoids of a dot matrix printer of the kind described in Specification 1,365,395 are each energized from a driver circuit wherein an input 51 is connected to an output of a 7 output character generator. When the applied input is low, 51 is held to ground and zero current flows in R4. When it is high, current flows in the same and with diode D 1 backbiased into the base of transistor Q 3 so that current flows through resistor R 3 and the transistor to develop voltage across Zener diode ZD 1 whereby transistors Q 2 , Q 1 operate as emitter followers deriving voltage across R 1 ; resistor R 2 limiting power dissipation in Q 2 . Consequent collector current flows in Q 1 to energize solenoid L 1 . On cut off due to diminution of input, the solenoid current transverse diode D 2 to charge capacitor C 1 which is parallel resonant with the solenoid inductance, and the diode permits cycle only of the resonant characteristic to develop. The charge bleeds off through resistor R 5 to a predetermined bias level prior to the next discharge, and the resistor is chosen to develop a predetermined time constant. The diodes D 1 of the several driver circuits are common cathode connected to the collector of Q 4 , and when the printer is running relay S 1 is energized to close D 2 and inhibit current through D 3 into base of Q 4 , which is shut off. Diodes D 1 are backbiased so that no drive input can be shunted. When the printer is shut off, the energization of relay S 1 ceases before the driver circuits 50 are de-energized. Contact C 2 opens, and current flows through R 6 and D 3 into the base of Q 4 which saturates, whereby the solenoid drive circuit bases are grounded through unbiased diodes D 1 and no solenoid can then be energized.
