Abstract
1365444 Brake discs: ciutch discs B F GOODRICH CO 11 May 1972 [12 May 1971] 22094/72 Headings F2C and F2E An annular brake or clutch disc with parallel faces comprises a plurality of partially overlapping strips of high temperature pyrolized material bonded together by a pyrolized bonding material disposed between the strips, each of the strips extending circumferentially with one end forming part of one disc face and the other end forming part of the other disc face. Arcuate segments 16 having flat faces and of preferably 45 to 180 degrees angular extent, e.g. 90 degrees (though they could extend from 0 to 45 degrees or greater than 180 degrees), are cut from sheets of pyrolized carbon or graphite cloth, e.g. rayon, having warp cords tangential to the opposed arcuate edges at their mid points. These segments 16, whose arcuate edges form the inner and outer peripheries of the disc, are overlapped and bonded togeher with a high temperature thermosetting resin, e.g. phenolic resin. The assembly is subjected to high temperature and pressure in an autoclave or hydraulic press to cure the resin. Any glaze on the surface is removed to allow gas to pass out of the assembly which is then heated to remove such gases. The assembly is then pyrolized for the bonds to form as graphite bonds at 2800‹ C. or carbon bonds at 1400‹ C. Gas or resin may then be inserted to fill any pores to build up deposits of carbon or graphite. The assembly is machined to produce flat faces, which contain the ends of the segments and of the bonding layers, and grooves 11 in the inner or outer peripheries for mounting to stationary or rotatable members.
