Abstract
1365524 Nylon monofilament yarn; knitted fabrics FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc 6 Aug 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 37038/71 Headings D1F D1K and D1W A process for producing a nylon monofilament yarn suitable for knit goods comprises feeding the yarn at 1000-5000 feet per minute through a 2-30 inch heating zone maintained at 150-220‹C, friction false twist texturing the yarn to impart 20-40 turns per inch false twist, cooling the yarn for 5-50 milliseconds between the heating means and the false twist means, and taking-up the yarn on a ring and traveller mechanism while inserting real twist e.g. #-1 turn per inch, to the yarn in the opposite direction to said false twist. In a preferred embodiment the heating means is a heated snubbing pin 28, and the friction false twist means is a flange 42 on a draw roll 32, the yarn frictionally contacting the flange 42 before being passed in several turns about the draw roll 32 and associated separator roll 34. The yarn is preferably held on the flange 42 by a guide 44. The draw ratio is preferably 3.5:1 to 5:1. In a further embodiment, the yarn is drawn prior to false twist insertion. The monofilament yarn used is preferably nylon 6 or nylon 6,6. The yarn produced by the above method is stated to be especially suitable for the manufacture of stretch hosiery, the yarn possessing properties which enhance the setting of hosiery in boarding treatments. Such a property is the Boardability Factor, which is defined in the specification. The yarn is characterised by having a Boardability Factor less than 2, preferably 1-2, and most preferably 1-1.5. Another such property is the twist liveliness defined as the product of torque and denier of the yarn. The yarn is characterised by having a twist liveliness less than 600, preferably 450-600, and most preferably 500-600.
