Abstract

1367991 Information storage and retrieval AMPEX CORP 27 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 19534/72 Heading G4H Control commands (for, e.g. an audiovisual educational programme) are incorporated in an information storage and retrieval system in the form of control words whose digits are represented by different numbers of cycles of a signal having a frequency of less than 100 Hz (e.g. 55 Hz), each word being superimposed on information-bearing signals in an audioprogramming console 30 during storage and separated therefrom by a detector 56 during retrieval. Each word consists of an identity bit (9 cycles) followed by two ” class of data ” bits and seven ” data ” bits (binary 1, 0 being represented by 6 and 3 cycles respectively); the ” class of data ” bits serve to separate the commands into ” picture “, ” video message “, ” function ” and ” special ” codes. Data is fed into a computer 26 from a teletype 28 ; the information-bearing signals are fed from here via an encoder 34 to a recorder 32 and are monitored via headphones 40: when a control word is needed it is summoned from 26 by selector switch 42 and fed to a parallel track of recorder 32. The two tracks are then combined at 36 and recorded on one track of recorder 38. During retrieval the combined signals are fed from a buffer 64: the information-bearing signals are detected by a filter 54, and the control word causes a tone detector 56 to transmit data and clock signals to a register 66 whose output is directed by logic 68 to the appropriate latch 70 to provide the required control 72. A computer (e.g. 26) may replace 66-70. Input apparatus 26, 28 may be replaced by a switch-operated code generator 62, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which case the information bearing signals are prerecorded in 32 and the control word is fed directly to 36 from (62) and encoder 34.
