Abstract
1368173 Tailgates DIESEL EQUIPMENT Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54058/72 Heading B7B In a powered tailgate for a vehicle comprising a tailgate platform which is pivoted at its inner edge to slide members 16 which may be raised or lowered, the platform has an inner part 14b and an outer part 14a which are hinged together. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 1, box 12 contains an hydraulic mechanical system for raising or lowering the tailgate, the members 16 being slidable in posts 10. Torsion bars 22 bias the platform into the vertical position. In the folded position hooks 26, Fig. 3, engage in brackets 28 welded to the posts 10. Before pivoting outer part 14a about hinges 20, locking bars 30 are freed from channel members 32, 34 by interconnecting levers 36, 38, the latter being fixed rigidly to transverse rod 24 which has a similar lever mechanism mounted at its other end. A stud (48), Fig. 2 (not shown) fixed to part 14a is engaged in a notch 50 in lever 36 to lock the platform in the folded position. Rod 24 also carries a rigidly attached lever 52 which swings under a stop member 54 on post 10. As a safety measure, lever 52 with lever 64 is also used to render inoperative a control lever 60 of the hydraulic drive system 12-when the platform is folded. Fig. 4 shows the platform parts connected by a chain 70 which pulls against two leaf springs 72, the bias of which assist in the unfolding of the platform. Alternatively, Fig. 6, a pair of cables 74 exert bias in coil springs 76 when the platform is folded. In a modification, Fig. 7, the parts 14a, 14b have overlapping flanges 110a, 110b hinged by pivot pins 114, the flange 110a bearing against a channel member (115), Fig. 10 (not shown) to prevent inward folding of the parts 14a, 14b. Arms 116 the upper ends of which are connected to slide members 16 by chains 120 are pivotally connected by pins 118 to outer portion 14a and apply an opening moment about stops 117 to retain the platform in the unfolded horizontal position. Flanges 124 each have a slot 125 receiving a latch pin 128 of the portion 14a when the tailgate is lowered by the hydraulic drive in the folded position. A latch 130 is then manually moved to lock in the pin 128. A mechanism is provided, Fig. 11 (not shown), which does not allow valve (146) of the hydraulic drive to be opened by control rod 154 when the latch pin 128 is locked in.
