Abstract
1368210 Sulphur dioxide PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 9 March 1972 [10 March 1971] 11011/72 Heading C1A Liquid sulphur is passed under pressure through a small diameter orifice into a stream of primary combustion supporting gas to form a relatively coarse spray which is in turn passed through a constriction zone coaxial with the orifice and with the combustion chamber, the primary gas being set into turbulence before entering the constriction zone, the fine spray so produced being passed into a conical space formed by the end wall of the combustion chamber, secondary combustion-supporting gas being introduced along the lateral walls of the combustion chamber downstream of the conical space relative to the flow direction of the gas mixture. The pressure of the gas mixture in the combustion chamber is preferably between atmospheric and 12 bars and the temperature of the liquid sulphur is at from 145 C. to 155 C. The pressure differential between the primary combustion supporting gas and that in the chamber is preferably not greater than 2 bars. The concentration of SO2 in the mixture leaving the chamber is maintained between 4% and 15% by volume. Air is preferred as the combustion gas. The sulphur burner comprises a chamber 1 of generally cylindrical form constructed with a conical portion 5 at one end. The injection device 6 opens into the apex of the conical portion, the apex angle being about 30 degrees. Liquid sulphur is injected by the pipe 7, primary air being introduced through conduit 8. Secondary air is introduced through a plurality of conduits 9 opening obliquely into the chamber 1. Additional secondary air may also be introduced through conduits 10. An opening 12 in the opposite end wall 11 allows free passage of the burned gases containing SO2, heat available in the exhaust gases being utilized by boiler 13.
