Abstract

1371526 Photo-electric position finding systems S W JORGENSEN and P M JOHNSON 26 Oct 1971 49787/71 Heading H4D [Also in Division G4] A beacon for providing an observer with an indication of his angular position with respect to a reference line on the beacon comprises a radiation source 10 and a rotating drum 14 with a mask having opaque and transparent portions 16 arranged in n “bit” groups to define 2n angular positions. In the illustrated embodiment a light system is used but other radiation, e.g. microwaves, can be utilized. Light rays from source 10, e.g. a xenon flash tube, and mirror 12 pass through transparent portions of the mask and are focused by projection lens 18. The light rays are formed by aperture 28 and an optional beam spreader (29) (Fig. 1A, not shown) into horizontal fan-shaped beams 26. The mask, Fig. 2, is divided into regions 30 to 42, “bit” groups 32-42 being provided, black areas being opaque. As the light rays are formed into beams 26 the sequence of received light impulses depends upon the vertical angular position of the observer, with respect to, e.g., the centre line of the mask, the mask of Fig. 2 allowing 64 (2b) angular positions to be determined. For example, sequence 58 illustrates impulses received for a position in which the observer’s line of sight is 1 “resolution element” (half the vertical width of a black or white portion of region 40) down from the centre line of the mask. Sequences 60, 62 and 64 correspond to positions 2, 3 and 3¢ resolution elements below the centre line respectively. The light source may be excited continuously or flashed whenever a region 30-42 is fully within the slit defined by aperture 28. In the latter case the cylindrical drum is preferably replaced by a polygonal drum (141) (Fig. 1c, not shown), each face of which carries a particular region 30-42. The receiver may comprise a collecting lens (44), (Fig. 3, not shown), detector (48), amplifier (50), impulse memory (52), decoder (54) and meter read-out (56). If the drum is rotated slowly enough unaided human observation may be used and in this case a Morse type code replaces regions 30-42 (Fig. 5, not shown). According to his position the observer will receive a particular sequence of short and long pulses, a warning signal (82) being provided on the drum mask to indicate the start of a new code cycle. The observer can then refer to a decoding table (Fig. 6, not shown) to determine his position. Although the described embodiment only gives information as to vertical position, a second identical device may be provided at right angles and operating a different wavelength to give horizontal information.
