Abstract
1374776 Knitting machines STIBBE-MONK DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 47577/71 Heading D1C A circular or flat one or two-bed knitting machine with two or more knitting stations has, beneath the lower end of each needle, or a jack associated therewith, a horizontal spring wire which is selected in advance of each knitting station to pass above or below a control cam by an electromagnetically controlled armature which closes or does not close the normal pathway of the wires. The machine, if circular, may have a stationary or rotary cylinder and may have compound needles. In an arrangement similar to that described in specification 42437/71 two sets of alternately longer and shorter wires 13, 21 are provided fixed respectively at two levels in blocks 18 and corresponding to the needle tricks extending through extensions of the latter. Wires 13, 21 are respectively associated with spring wire armatures 23, 22 and cams 11, 12, 19 and 20, 27 all of which are mounted on brackets 26 removable through openings 14a in housing 14 which supports the cam cylinder. There can be more than two sets of wires e.g. 3 or 4 at different levels. When armatures 23, 22 are inoperative, their tips are covered by guard tips 20a, 19a of cams 20, 19 but, when operative, they block the gaps between cams 20, 27 and cams 19, 12. Wires 13, 21 are lifted against their own resilience by cams 11, 19, 20 so that the ends engaging the cams are biassed downwards. If armatures 23, 22, which are controlled by electromagnetic selectors 24, 25, are inoperative the wires will slide down through the gaps and be raised by the cams for the next selection. If armatures 23, 22 are operative, wires 13, 21 will be raised by cams 12, 27 to lift corresponding jacks 4 before returning to cams 11, 19, 20 for reselection. The lifting of jacks 4 moves butt 3a of tilting jack 3 into engagement with cam edge 9b and removes butt 3b from between cam 8 and edge 9a so that corresponding needles are not raised. Edge 29a of cam 29 pushes butts 3a out before the next selection. In a V-bed machine, the needles have knitting butts 31a a and extensions 31b each operated on by a spring wire 32, wires 32 being fixed in blocks 33 and having their ends guided between extensions of the trick walls of needle bed 30. When the carriage moves in direction F, wires 32 are all raised from normal position by cam 38 after which if armature 39 is blocking the gap between cams 38 and 40, wires 32 pass onto face 40a of cam 40 and lift the needles so that their butts 31a engage the clearing cam 42. If the gap is not blocked, the ends of the wires drop down and their associated needles are not raised. Electromagnetic selector 41 operates the armature 39. A similar arrangement controls stitch transfer. Preferably; the relaxed position of the spring armature is between two electro-magnetic pole faces and it is operative in contact with one face and inoperative in contact with the other.
