Abstract

1374838 Apparatus for connecting submerged pipes; cleaning with fluid jet SUBSEA EQUIPMENT ASSOCIATES Ltd 6 Sept 1972 [10 April 1972] 41308/72 Heading F2G and F2N Apparatus for connecting a pipe 32 by remote control between submerged terminal stations, each having a conduit 15 and a guide structure 35 therearound, includes a mobile support 40 carrying connectors 11, 7 linked by the pipe 32. The connectors 11, 7 are held in the support 40 by retaining means 41, 58 and 13, 12 which are released in turn at each terminal station by contact with a stop member 14 on the guide structure. The connectors lock on to the conduit end 15 by depression of a connector control member 11d (see Specification 1,374,712 this Division). After connection of the lower connector 11 to the conduit 15 the support 40 is movable to a second terminal station and connector 7 is connected to a conduit (38) (Figs. 2, 3 not shown), inside a guide structure (37) thus connecting the conduits by the pipe 32. As shown, the support 40 is lowered from the surface on a rod string 33 provided with impact absorption devices both on the surface vessel and at 23, 24, and guided to the terminal by a locating device 10, e.g. sonar equipment, the pipe being held clear of the support by floats 28, 29 connected by frangible painters 47, 48 to a support 30. As the support 40 is lowered into the guide structure 35 a feeler 19 contacts a stud 52 and triggers the release of a first stop 25, Fig. 1b to release a rod 22 and thus also the support structure 40. The support 40 drops causing the stop 14, Fig. 1a, to lift a sleeve 13 which frees locking ball 41. An abutment 9 on a sleeve 18 depresses the connector control member 11d to lock the connector on to a flange 15a of the conduit 15. During this lowering, a lever 56, Fig. 1a, controlling the tap 4a of a compressed air bottle 2, strikes a stop 57 to open the tap. Compressed air is delivered through a tube 16 when the end of the tube is adjacent the flange 15a. The eddies of water so formed remove marine fouling on the flange 15a to ensure a good connection. The support is then raised and moved to the second terminal where the operation is repeated with the upper connector 7, a second stop 26 initiating the fall of support 40, release of locking ball 58, opening of a tap 4b and depression of the connector lock control 7b by a plate 34. As the rod string 33 is finally raised, frangible painters 47, 48 break since the floats 28, 29 are connected to rod 33 by lines 49, 50.
