Abstract
1375409 Extruding tubes R. HAGEN [trading as KAUTEX-WERK REINOLD HAGEN] 30 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 60715/71 Heading B5A A multilayer thermoplastics tube is extruded from a cross-head die 113 in which a melt entering an inlet 120 is divided at 122 into two streams flowing first in opposite directions around a mandrel 114 and then along and progressively around the mandrel on opposite surfaces of a sleeve 119 until the opposite edges of each stream meet to form two separate tubular streams having circumferentially offset longitudinal seams, the tubular streams being united in an annular chamber 116 leading to extrusion orifice 117. Alternatively the two streams may be further divided into two component streams which are re-united to form tubular streams each having two diametrically opposed weld lines offset 90 degrees to the weld lines of the other stream. A storage chamber 145 contains an annular piston 146 connected by rods 147 to a ring piston 148 in chamber 149. The pressure of the melt is used to force piston 146 back until chamber 145 is filled, whereupon fluid is forced into cylinder 149 causing piston 146 to move forward and extrude the contents of chamber 145 through the orifice 117, thus parisons for blow moulding are discontinuously extruded while continuously operating the screw of the extruder 111. There may be two inlets and associated duct systems to provide a hollow body having inner corrosion resistant layers and outer layers of greater mechanical strength.
