Abstract
1375446 Electro-chemical analysis GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 4 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 45669/72 Heading GIN 1N A membrane specific to potassium ions comprises a mixture of a hydrophobic elastomeric polymer with a di-electric constant of from 4 to 13 and a potassium ion specific carrier which is nonactin gramicidin, valinomycin or a mixture thereof. A solution of the carrier and polymer is cast on a glass plate in the form of a film from which a portion is punched out and sealed to the end of a glass tube containing an NaCl electrolyte and Ag/AgCl electrode. Examples of polymers are given and include polyurethanes, chloroprene polymers, vinylidene fluoride hexafluosopropylene polymers and organopolysiloxane polycarbonate block polymers. Examples of methods of production of which are described. The carrier may be added to the polymer in the form of its electrically neutral molecular species or in the form of a salt whose cation is the complex species formed between a potassium ion and the neutral carrier and whose anion is a hydrophobic lipophilic anion such as tetraphenyl borate. This increases the conductivity of the membrane.
