Abstract

1375605 Automatic control of current and temperature MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 15 March 1972 [15 March 1971(2)] 11981/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] A control device comprises a thermistor associated with means for controlling the heat transfer to or from the thermistor whereby the current through the thermistor is prevented from exceeding a predetermined value. A load 13 is fed from a current source 10 by way of a PTC thermistor 11 and the winding of a solenoid 12 which controls the position, relatively to the thermistor, of a plate 14. With a normal current flow in the series circuit 11, 12, 13 the solenoid 12 is insufficiently energized and the plate 14 is held in physical contact with the thermistor 11 by springs 15. In this condition the plate 14 acts as a heat sink to the thermistor so that its temperature, and hence its resistance, remains within normal limits. If the current in the circuit 11, 12, 13 rises beyond the predetermined limit the solenoid 12 becomes energized sufficiently to remove the plate 14 from contact with the thermistor whereupon the temperature, and hence the resistance, thereof increases and the current flow therethrough reduced. In another embodiment a lamp is arranged to heat the thermistor and the control means is a shutter which can be interposed between the lamp and the thermistor. Fig.3 shows a temperature control arrangement wherein a second thermistor 22 senses the temperature of a heatable object 24 thereby to control the current flowing through the heating element 18. Other arrangements show the use of a thyristor, a transistor or a Zener diode or further the solenoid may be provided with two windings through one of which flows the charging and discharging current of a capacitor.
