Abstract
1377683 Photo-electric flame detectors CERBERUS AG 3 March 1972 [4 March 1971] 9986/72 Heading G1A [Also in Divisions F4 and G4] A flame detector including a photo-cell 1 comprises circuitry for distinguishing in the photo-cell output any randomly alternating component caused by flame flicker and utilizing this component, or its absence, to signal presence or absence of flame respectively. The output from a photo-diode, photo-resistor or photo-transistor 1 positioned to receive flame radiation if filtered and amplified at 2. The filter pass-band, typically 2 to 40 Hz, allows through the flame flicker component as well as any other cyclically varying component in that range. However, the flame flicker component is characterized by its non-constant amplitude maxima, whereas other components of the filter output, caused e.g. by light reflection from moving parts or interference from flickering lamps, will have a steady A.C. level. Hence the output from rectifier 3 and low-pass filter 4, whose upper cut-off is less than the lower cut-off amplifier 2, is a D.C. signal, corresponding to the “non-random” photo-cell output, on which is superimposed, in the presence of flame, an A.C. “flicker” signal. This signal is amplified at 5 and then supplied to a threshold detector and integrator 6. This circuit provides a signal to a relayoperated alarm if the A.C. input to it persists for a predetermined time period. This may be done by generating pulses when an integrated voltage level is exceeded and counting these pulses per unit time. Fail-safe arrangements. If the level of the “non- random” output from amplifier 2 is high, this amplifier may become overloaded and thereby block the flame detector. To signal such an overload the D.C. level at the output of filter 4 is sensed, e.g. by a second threshold detector, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), which supplies an alarm signal, indicating overload, when the threshold is exceeded. In the embodiment of Fig.5 (not shown), the D.C. output from the filter 4 is used in an a g c loop to control the voltage supply to the photo-cell 1. The photo-cell may be provided with a red or infrared filter. More than one photo-cell may be used, each having a different spectral sensitivity, arranged in series or difference circuits.
