Abstract

1377919 Hopper barges DEGGENDORFER WERFT UND EISENBAU GmbH 30 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40769/73 Heading B7A [Also in Division F1] An hydraulic circuit for closing and opening the two halves 1, 2 of a hopper barge comprises two cylinders 5, 6 located at a respective end of the barge and a three position valve 11 which in position a allows the halves 1, 2 to open due to the weight of cargo, and, when the barge is empty, in position b to close the two halves or, in position c to open the two halves. In position a pump 12 is ineffective and the rods of the cylinders 5, 6 extend causing fluid to flow from the rod ends of cylinders 5, 6 to the piston end of cylinder 5 via a line 19 and excess fluid to flow therefrom to a reservoir 14 via a throttle 13 in a pipe 10. Simultaneously fluid flows from a reservoir 15 via a line 16 to the piston end of cylinder 6. In position b, a pump 12 delivers fluid to the cylinder 5 to retract the rod whilst fluid from the piston end exhausts to the reservoir 14 via throttle 13. Due to the closing of the two halves the rod of cylinder 6 is also retracted and fluid flows from its piston end partly to the rod end via a one way valve 17 and partly to the reservoir 15. When closed, pressure is maintained on the cylinder 6 by the pump 12 via the line 19 and a spring biased one way valve 21 therein. In position c, the rod of cylinder 5 is extended by the pump 12 delivering fluid via line 8 whilst fluid flows from the rod end to the reservoir 14 via lines 7 and 10. Simultaneously the rod of cylinder 6 is extended as the two halves move apart and fluid flows from its rod end via a one way valve 20, lines 19, 7 and 10 to the reservoir 14 and to its piston end from reservoir 15 via line 16.
