Abstract

1377962 Starting converters GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 11 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 52388/71 Addition to 1279856 Heading H2F In a starting arrangement of the type described in Specification 1,279,856 (e.g. for starting a converter in a HVDC system), the gate pulses are initially supplied with a progressively increasing firing angle. As shown, the circuit of the Specification 1,279,856 is modified by an additional switching device 231 closed by a signal from the starting switch driver 45. When the switching device 231 is closed, capacitor 220 charges for a few milliseconds and the resulting voltage rise causes the firing angle to increase, e.g. from 20-60 degrees. The time constant of charging is preferably the same as the rate of rise of current in the HVDC link. A time delay 234 is included which is initiated either from the starting switch driver 45 or when the current in the HVDC link 7 has reached predetermined limits so as to disable the starting circuit after a period of approximately 8 milliseconds. The circuit is applicable to use with a 12-pulse converter formed by two 6-pulse bridges in series.
