Abstract
1378003 Leak sealing by polymerization in situ J J PACKO 29 Nov 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 55195/71 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] Leaks in vessels are sealed by allowing gaseous polymerizable monomer to escape through the leak, in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, preferably to the ambient environment, and hence polymerize at the site of the leak and form a solid polymeric seal. Vessels specified are pipes, pipelines, conduits, closed containers and tanks; particular applications are the sealing of small leaks in underground fuel gas piping systems and in telephone conduits containing inert gas under pressure. The polymerizable compound is normally mixed with a carrier gas. Classes of such polymerizable compounds are:-mono- and multi-ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, haloalkenes, alkylene oxides, alkylene carbonates, alkenyl nitriles, alkenoic acids, alkynes, aldehydes and ketones, alkenoic acid esters, alkenyl alcohols and esters, alkenyl ethers, organosilanes, five-membered ring compounds containing one hetero-oxygen atom, Group IV organometallic compoundethylenic compound mixtures and oligomers of the preceding classes. In examples, steel pipe with simulated leaks is buried in clay soil and the following monomer/catalyst systems introduced in a nitrogen carrier stream:-isoprene/ aluminium triethyl, ethylene oxide/zinc diethyl, tetrahydrofuran/boron trifluoride (with monomer stream or subsequently), acrylonitrile/ hydrogen peroxide, styrene/diborane, methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile/butyl borine and styrene-butadiene/diborane.
