Abstract

1378032 Hose reels; spring drum apparatus CASCADE CORP 16 June 1972 [31 March 1972] 28205/72 Headings B8M and B8B [Also in Division E2] A flexible line take-up assembly comprises a journal member 32, a line connector 34 including a hub 34a and line-attaching means 34c, mounted for rotation on the journal member 32, the line-attaching means 34c comprising a pair of line-attaching devices 68, 70 spaced axially on the hub 34a, and line storing means 36 for collecting and storing line in windings including a generally annular line-receiving channel 92, 94 disposed radially outwardly of the connector 34 and mounted thereon for rotation therewith as a unit, the storing means 36 connecting with the hub 34a in a region intermediate the axially spaced attaching devices 68, 70 and having a configuration exposing the devices 68, 70 for access in directions generally radially and axially of the hub. In the particular embodiment, the journal member 32 has parallel bores 40, 42 and radial bores 48, 50 opening into spaced circumferential grooves 52, 54. The feed and exhaust hoses 20, 22 are coupled to the bores 40, 42. The connector member 34 rotatably supported on the journal 32 is fixed in the axial direction by a spring clip 58 and a shoulder 56. The connector member 34 has a hub 34a and a radially extending portion connecting a head portion 34c to the hub 34a. Hoses 23, 25 to be wound on the reel 36 are connected to the devices 68, 70 on the head 34c and are in communication with bores 40, 42 via bores 64, 66 and grooves 60, 62 aligned with grooves 52, 54, respectively. The hub 34a also has a radially extending flange 34d to which are attached radial portions 80 of reel members 36a, 36b. The reel 36 therefore rotates with the connector member 34. The reel 36 preferably comprises two mirror-image 36a, 36b, separated by a divider 78 to provide two annular channels 92, 94. An aperture 86 is provided in portions 80 and divider 78 for access to the head portion 34c. The hoses 23, 25 extend through slots in the wall portions 82 of the channels 92, 94 and are guided by convex pivotal guides for smooth passage from the head portion 34c to the channels 92, 94. The reel 36 is spring-biased by a coil spring 104 in a housing 38 attached to the reel 36. The spring 104 is riveted at 108 to the casing 38, and the inner end is secured to the journal member 32 by a releasable fastening preventing spring damage due to back-winding. The hose reel is particularly for use on a fork-lift truck with hydraulically operated components.
