Abstract

1381156 Mixing apparatus; comminuting apparatus FRANZ MORAT GmbH 4 Aug 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 36615/72 Headings B1C and B2A An apparatus for making emulsions and dispersions comprises a stator 1 and rotor 2 having interdigitating annular rings of teeth 3a1, 3b1, 3c1 and 3a2, 3b2, 3c2 respectively, the radial flanks of each tooth being inclined to the axis of rotation 6. Material is supplied from a central chamber 4 formed by the spaces between the teeth 3c2 which may be only three in number, and is sheared as it passes radially outwards between the teeth, with a frequency which may be ultrasonic. The inclination of the faces of outer rows of teeth is less than that of inner rows (see Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) whereby material may be progressively comminuted. The clearance X, Y between the teeth of the rotor and stator may be altered by axial adjustment as shown in Fig. 1, the stator tube may be threaded at 13 into the mounting 14 and locked by a knob 15, or adjusted by a pinion and rack 17, 18. In modifications the stator may be threadedly adjustable on the bottom of the tube 7 (see Fig. 2, not shown) or be raised and lowered as it is rotated by cooperation of a pin 143, Fig. 10, with an inclined slot; or the rotor bearing may be axially adjustable in the stator tube (see Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). Indexing means may be provided. The embodiment of Fig. 1 is an immersion mixer; Fig. 10 depicts a continuous discharge multi-stage apparatus in which the shaft 136 mounts three rotors 135 and an inlet impeller 139 in a housing 130, and which is provided with a heat exchange jacket 145.
