Abstract
1383600 Chucks and mandrels L T MORAWSKI and J J PARKER 2 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 9685/72 Heading B3B A work-holder, e.g. a rotary chuck or a mandrel for mounting between centres, for holding splined workpieces 66, 194 comprises a body 10 (Fig. 1) having a central axis, a first member 18 fixedly mounted on said body and having a plurality of axially extending fingers 30 spaced ciroumferentially about said axis, a second member 40 journalled in said body for rotation about said axis and having a plurality of radially extending lugs 60 thereon spaced circumferentially about said axis, the fingers and lugs of said two members being in circumferential interdigital relation about said axis with circumferential clearance therebetween, one of said members having two sets of teeth 36, 38 thereon spaced apart axially, at least one of said sets of teeth being formed on said fingers or lugs, the other member having a single set of teeth 62 thereon formed on the fingers or lugs and located axially between the other two sets of teeth 36, 38, said three sets of teeth being arranged to engage the splines 64 of the workpiece, and means being provided to rotate one of said two members about said axis such that the teeth in said single set act in opposition to the teeth in said two sets to grip the splines of the workpiece. In a chuck (Fig. 1) the member 40 is rotated through a helical gear 42 by a draw bar 48 in a spindle 14. In a mandrel (Fig. 7) a shaft 72 is rotated relative to a body 154 by rotating a screw threaded stem 180. Various embodiments are described wherein the fingers and the lugs are provided alternatively on either the first or the second member. A chuck is described for gripping externally a splined workpiece.
