Abstract

1383605 Electromagnetic forming ALUMINIUM SUISSE SA 25 Oct 1972 [5 Nov 1971] 49192/72 Heading B3Q A die against which tubular metal work 11 is formed electromagnetically by a coil 10 comprises an elastically-deformable non-divided wall 4 having at least one impression in intaglio or relief and backed by an annular chamber 8 for a fluid. Oil is fed into the chamber 8 to contract the rubber wall 4 against the work 11 to the position 41 before a discharge current is passed through the coil 10 for forming the work. Oil pressure in the chamber is now reduced, allowing the wall 4 to resume its initial shape and so release the work, the oil also being effective to cool the die. The pressure can be further reduced to withdraw the wall 4 to a position 411. Alternatively, 41 may be the initial position of the wall which may be reinforced by a steel sheath, arcuate members secured by springs or by embedded wires, Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown). The die may be mounted on a movable arm and have one end closed; the outer casing 1 may be formed of metal or nylon.
