Abstract

1389084 Automatic control of speed ENGINS MATRA 28 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 30311/72 Heading G3R Speed of a traction motor is automatically controlled by a system which receives speed demand signals and compares them with signal representing the actual speed to provide a difference signal which is used to select a parameter representing the allowable rate of change of acceleration or deceleration which parameter is integrated and limited and is used to control the motor. The value of the rate of charge of acceleration parameter and the limit imposed on the rate of acceleration signal are chosen to give a comfortable ride for the passengers and typically are o.6 m/su3 and 1.3 m/su2 respectively. In the system shown the required speed signal VE is compared at 4 with the vehicle speed VS to produce a signal which is further compared with a rate signal in comparator 7 giving the signal E which is used in means 8 to select which value should be provided for the rate of change of acceleration #γ. The value of #γ that is chosen is either for maximum rate of change of acceleration, zero or maximum rate of change of deceleration. The signal #γ is integrated at 9 and limited by the parallel limiter 10 which fixes the maximum value L of acceleration and the maximum value L1 of deceleration and the resulting acceleration signal γ e is compared with the actual acceleration of the vehicle derived from the vehicle speed VS when differentiated in 5. The multiplier K2, whose value is 10 ensures that changes in mass of the vehicle do not affect the control system operation, provides the useable acceleration signal γ c which supplies amplifier 3 for controlling motor 4. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) a closed loop speed control system is used for the motor and the incoming acceleration signal applied to the loops is integrated to provide a speed signal.
